Topics to be covered

RSV and the Heart
Prof Andrew Sindone

Infection with Respiratory Syncytial Virus is more likely in older patients with cardiac disease. And older people with cardiac disease are more likely to have significantly worse health outcomes if they contract RSV infection. In this talk, cardiologist Professor Andrew Sindone discusses the potentially deadly combination of RSV and cardiac disease, the role of vaccination and, importantly, recent changes in RSV vaccine indication.

Oral Contraceptive Pill in Teens
Dr Kathleen McNamee, Prof Sonia Grover

Prescribing the much-studied combined oral contraceptive pill to teenagers can still present challenges. In this session, Dr Kathleen McNamee interviews adolescent gynaecologist, Professor Sonia Grover, asking her a series of audience-generated questions related to the use of the COCP in teenagers. Professor Grover will give her opinion on a range of issues from her preferred COCP for teens and skipping periods, to managing pill side effects and the role of the progesterone-only pill. Real world answers to real world problems.

Menopausal Hormone Therapy - What Dose of Estrogen is Best?
Prof Rod Baber

When initiating MHT in symptomatic, menopausal patients, an important first decision that needs to be made is what dose of what formulation would be best for the particular woman. In this very practical talk, Professor Rod Baber uses a case study to demonstrate how best to assess a woman presenting with troublesome menopausal symptoms. He will then discuss the relevant, evidence-based recommendations for prescribing MHT, including appropriate mode of delivery, dosage, monitoring of effectiveness and side effects, as well as what to do when response is inadequate - it is not just a case of increasing the dose.

Cardiovascular Benefits of GLP1s – New Evidence
Dr Adam Nelson

Treating obesity is now recommended as part of best practice care for overweight or obese patients who have had an adverse cardiovascular event. As cardiologist Dr Adam Nelson explains, weight loss should now be considered a therapeutic target in the same way we treat cholesterol and blood pressure when implementing secondary prevention after a heart attack for instance. In this talk, Dr Nelson will also present evidence for the effectiveness of GLP-1 agonists in this space and how agents such as semaglutide can and should be included in clinical care according to international cardiology guidelines and even our own TGA recommendations.
