From The Web / Sanitising public places: ultraviolet LEDs show promise
Ultraviolet LEDs have been shown to be effective in eliminating coronavirus from surfaces and potentially also air and water, according to US researchers.
Researchers at UC Santa Barbara’s Solid State Lighting & Energy Electronics Center (SSLEEC) are developing ultraviolet LEDs that can decontaminate surfaces that have come into contact with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, reports Medicalxpress.
Ultraviolet light disinfection has been around for a while and a small market already exists for UV-C disinfection products for medical use.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, materials scientists at SSLEEC were already working to advance UV-C LED technology. The hope now is that UV-C light could be integrated into systems that turn on when no one is present to provide a low-cost, chemical-free and convenient way to sanitise public, retail, personal and medical spaces.
