I completed my medical degree (University of Melbourne) in 2001. In 2007 I completed by MPH in International Health and epidemiology. I received my PhD from the University of Melbourne in 2011, and completed specialist haematology training in 2011
I am a Division head at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research where my basic and public health research focuses on iron metabolism, red blood cells, and also public health control of anaemia and undernutrition. I am also a consultant haematologist at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, where I diagnose and treat a range of non-malignant blood disorders.
My broader interest encompass in the full breadth of global health, spanning from molecular aspects of inflammation/ iron interactions, through to the broader determinants of health including food security, wealth, dietary practices and culture, and ultimately, the fundamental determinants of health.
