Topics to be covered

Acne Management and Update
Prof Rodney Sinclair

Acne is a very common problem in General Practice. There are a wide variety of treatments – including some new arrivals – that GPs might find useful. In this lecture, Prof Sinclair will provide a refresher on current acne management and also provide an update on new agents that have become available.

Clinical Cases in Osteoporosis
Prof Ego Seeman

Prof Seeman is well known for making this important topic exciting! Ego will explain which patients are predisposed to fracture. Measuring remodelling markers and microstructure with BMD are important in osteopenia as well as osteoporosis. Choice of drug and duration of treatment are influenced by remodelling and microstructure assessment.

Contraceptive Pill – Which Pill for the Right Person
Dr Terri Foran

Dr Foran will explain the advantages and disadvantages of combined oral contraception, how to utilise the different qualities of various pill preparations to maximise non-contraceptive benefits and how to adjust dosages and preparations to address side-effect.

Premature Menopause
A/Prof John Eden

Premature ovarian failure is common and undertreated. Failure to treat is associated with increased risks of heart disease, fractures and CNS problems. Hormonal replacement therapy in this situation has some unique considerations as well as challenges and NOT all MHTs are the same and can vary considerably in costs. A/Prof Eden will provide practical advice on how to effectively manage the woman experiencing this difficult problem.

Troubleshooting Common IUD Issues in General Practice
Prof Deborah Bateson

IUDs are increasingly popular and so GPs who do not usually insert IUDs may well be called upon to deal with common problems. While most users experience few or no side-effects, when problems do occur they are usually missing threads, new onset pelvic pain, pregnancy with IUD in situ, bleeding problems and hormonal side-effects.
