Webcasts / Healthed Webcast – 5th March 2024
Healthed webcasts are a valuable educational platform, allowing viewers to gain up-to-date clinical knowledge through an easy, time-efficient format. Our free online seminars fill a huge unmet need amongst GPs outside of the major cities for quality, accessible education. Each webcast features four lectures and runs for two hours. While the majority of viewers are GPs, our webcasts are relevant for healthcare professionals including pharmacists and nurses.

We used to think that Respiratory Syncytial Virus mainly affected children, causing usually a fairly mild, cold-like illness. No more. We now know that RSV infection can cause significant morbidity even in adults, particularly older adults and is not only common but highly infectious and can cause repeated infections throughout life. In this talk, Associate Professor Michael Woodward will provide an update on what is now known about this virus in Australia as well as advise what is coming in terms of prevention and treatment of RSV, including vaccines which it is hoped will soon become available for those vulnerable to severe RSV infection.
Sun-related skin damage, also known as photo-ageing, is a major issue in Australia, and a major reason why patients in this country seek cosmetic treatments. Here, Dr Katherine Armour will present an overview on the various, currently-available options for the treatment of photo-ageing manifestations, and what each of these options entail. Importantly, she will also give an evidence-based appraisal of the effectiveness of these treatments and procedures, to ensure patient expectations are realistic and informed.

But working out who needs further investigation, diagnosis and treatment, and the best way to go about this - that's the challenge! Here, cardiologist, Dr David O'Donnell provides a valuable and very practical approach to managing the patient with that very common symptom - palpitations!
The fact that lack of oestrogen, post-menopause is a major risk factor for osteoporosis is well-known. But how big a risk is it? Can menopausal hormone therapy reverse the risk?
