Webcasts / Healthed Webcast – 6th February 2024
Healthed webcasts are a valuable educational platform, allowing viewers to gain up-to-date clinical knowledge through an easy, time-efficient format. Our free online seminars fill a huge unmet need amongst GPs outside of the major cities for quality, accessible education. Each webcast features four lectures and runs for two hours. While the majority of viewers are GPs, our webcasts are relevant for healthcare professionals including pharmacists and nurses.
These are activities that expand general practice knowledge, skills and attitudes, related to your scope of practice.

Long COVID appears to be the latest challenge facing GPs from the virus that just seems to keep on giving. Even though the proportion of people developing long COVID after an acute infection is very small, the continuing high incidence of people testing positive means potential long COVID cases will continue to increase. So, what exactly is long COVID? How is it diagnosed? And most importantly, how is it managed at a general practice level? In this talk, Professor Andrew Lloyd answers all these questions and more.
More than 3% of Australian children have Autism Spectrum Disorder, which is one of the highest rates in the world. Prof Cheryl Dissanayake AM, one of Australia’s leading experts, will describe what the early signs and red flags are in very young children and what the appropriate, most practical referral pathway is for expert assessment. Children with this condition can often also have other comorbidities such as anxiety, ADHD and depression, which often the GP may be called upon to treat. Prof Dissanayake will dispel some of the common misperceptions and also address the way in which changes to the NDIS might change the kinds of pressure that parents and carers may put on GPs.
In this talk, A/Prof Samantha Hocking will bring you up to date on all the latest developments on the GLP1 front. Currently, Trulicity, Saxenda, Ozempic and the most recent addition Mounjaro are the options available in Australia but more are coming over the horizon, including some that are oral rather than injectable. A/Prof Hocking will describe their approved indications, current issues such as shortages of supply and the most recent information about compliance and side effects. We will also look at long term data on glycaemic control and weight and if time permits we’ll explore the question about what should be done after the desired targets are achieved.
Childhood obesity is increasingly being recognised as a family health issue and one that is best addressed in the primary care setting. In this talk, paediatric endocrinologist A/Prof Gary Leong presents very practical guidelines on how GPs can ask, advise and inspire parents and carers of children with obesity to recognise the problem and take the necessary action to break the cycle of this potentially very damaging health condition.
