Webcasts / Healthed Webcast – 4th February 2025
Healthed webcasts are a valuable educational platform, allowing viewers to gain up-to-date clinical knowledge through an easy, time-efficient format. Our free online seminars fill a huge unmet need amongst GPs outside of the major cities for quality, accessible education. Each webcast features four lectures and runs for two hours. While the majority of viewers are GPs, our webcasts are relevant for healthcare professionals including pharmacists and nurses.
These are activities that expand general practice knowledge, skills and attitudes, related to your scope of practice.
These are activities that require reflection on feedback about your work.

In this lecture, Dr Rupert Hinds will present 2 practical case studies to illustrate Cow's Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA) and Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES): CMPA affects 2-3% of infants and can cause severe symptoms across multiple organ systems, including potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis. It can be diagnostically tricky due to symptom overlap with other conditions and the lack of a single definitive test. FPIES is important for GPs to recognise because it can present as a medical emergency with severe vomiting, dehydration and ultimately shock. It can often be misdiagnosed as viral gastroenteritis or sepsis. To add to the confusion, standard allergy tests are negative, making clinical recognition crucial. The condition's severity combined with diagnostic challenges makes physician awareness essential for prompt recognition and appropriate management.
Recently, the Lancet Commission has redefined obesity using new diagnostic criteria. BMI alone is no longer deemed sufficient for diagnosis - additional measurements and clinical assessment are required to distinguish between "clinical obesity" and "pre-clinical obesity". Its authors think that this new framework will help to improve diagnosis and reduce stigma. But will it make a big difference to what we are already doing in our clinics? A/Prof Sam Hocking will explain the changes and the practical implications. Join us for this essential update!
Medicare now covers the NT-proBNP blood test once annually in the GP setting. The test primarily helps to exclude heart failure and also as a guide to effectiveness of treatment. Recent research reveals higher-than-expected heart failure prevalence in Australia, affecting up to 1 million people. In this lecture, Prof Andrew Sindone will explain the best way to use the NT-pro-BNP test in the GP setting to diagnose earlier, treat more effectively, reduce hospital readmission and reduce mortality. This is an important development that's relevant to all your patients who might be suffering from, or have already been diagnosed with heart failure!
The title of this talk on ECGs really says it all. Fatal arrhythmias – the patterns GPs don't want to miss. Here, Professor Rukshen Weerasooriya will present a number of case studies demonstrating common presentations of uncommon but potentially fatal cardiac conditions. He will point out the red flags and the identifying ECG features of these conditions, increasing GPs' confidence so that key pathological signs of underlying disease won't be missed.
