Associate Professor Bernard Shiu is a general practitioner, medical educator and experienced practice owner. He is the owner and Clinical Director of Banksia Medical Centre, a growing four-site general practice group across Greater Geelong, and Director of the Geelong Long COVID Clinic. Bernard was named the RACGP Victorian GP of the Year in 2020. Under his leadership, Banksia Medical Centre was recognised as the RACGP Australian General Practice of the Year in 2023. Drawing on his experience establishing, acquiring and transforming medical practices, Bernard is passionate about sustainable practice ownership, business growth and building strong multidisciplinary healthcare teams. He has a particular interest in the workforce, financial and operational challenges facing general practice, and in developing practical models that allow practices to remain independent, innovative and viable. Bernard is also the author of The General Practice Playbook: The Australian Guide to Starting Up for Success. Alongside his clinical and business leadership, he serves as a Board Director of Western Victoria Primary Health Network and is actively involved in medical education, research and health policy. His work combines frontline general practice with entrepreneurship, workforce development and system leadership, giving him a practical perspective on how general practice must evolve to meet the needs of patients, clinicians and communities
