Topics to be covered

Benzodiazepines Dependence - Practical Advice
Dr Adam Straub

Benzodiazepine use in primary care is definitely tricky. They certainly can be very effective therapeutically, which is why they are still available. But as every GP would know, when patients get dependent on these drugs, it is often very difficult to get them to stop. Even getting them to want to stop, is commonly a big challenge. In this talk, addiction specialist Dr Adam Straub recognises the issues and addresses them with real-world advice and evidence-based recommendations. From conversation starters to practical withdrawal plans, Dr Straub will improve GPs' confidence in managing this very complex issue in the primary care setting.

Binge Eating Disorder – What GPs Need to Know
Dr Urvashnee Singh

Binge eating disorder has the highest lifetime prevalence of all the eating disorders, yet it is far less recognised than anorexia nervosa or bulimia. Here, Dr Vash Singh will present the key features of this disorder including the DSM-5 criteria for diagnosis. The talk is tailored to equip GPs with the necessary knowledge to identify, understand, and manage binge eating disorder effectively in their practices as well as helping them recognise and address likely physical and psychiatric comorbidities associated with this disorder.

Diabetes Specific Nutritional Formula - When & Why to Use Them
A/Prof Sof Andrikopoulos

Of late, so much of the focus on type 2 diabetes has been centred on weight loss, particularly with the advent of the GLP-1 agonists. But what of the role of lifestyle factors? In particular - diet? In this talk, Australian Diabetes Society CEO, Associate Professor Sof Andrikopoulos will address this specific issue, focussing on where diabetes specific nutrition formulas fit into the management of both type 2 diabetes and its predecessor - impaired glucose tolerance. In addition, he will discuss the important role these formulas can play in cases where malnutrition is present or potentially likely to occur.

Amenorrhea - When to Worry
Prof Sonia Grover

Fortunately, presentations of primary amenorrhea aren't all that frequent in general practice, but when they do occur, there is a reasonable expectation that the GP will know the latest evidence-based management of the problem. In this very practical talk, adolescent gynaecologist, Professor Sonia Grover will ensure that is exactly what happens. Professor Grover will present a very logical framework to the assessment of these young women, helping clinicians differentiate between the possible diagnoses and helping them decide which line of further investigations, referrals and treatments are likely to be most appropriate.
