Management of Acne in Teens

If a teenager presents to their GP for treatment of their acne, it's a bonus. So many turn to the internet, the beautician, their friends or Tik Tok for advice. For GPs, it is an opportunity to discover the young person's understanding and misunderstanding of the condition and its treatment and gauge the level of distress it is causing them. In this talk, Dr JoAnn See highlights common misconceptions teenagers have about acne, and the myriad of treatment regimens that are being recommended on social media. Importantly, she'll also outline a practical, stepwise management plan and include advice on how to engage these young patients and get them invested in the evidence-based management of this condition not only physically but mentally as well.

An Update on Heart Failure in General Practice

Heart failure is an increasingly common condition and one which GPs will, increasingly, be expected to manage in the primary care setting. In this talk, Dr Robert Hungerford will describe when heart failure should be suspected, how it can be assessed and diagnosed, and the practicalities of initiating and intensifying treatment in keeping with the latest evidence-based, best practice guidelines. In addition, Dr Hungerford will describe how these patients should be monitored and managed long-term and when they need to be referred on, all with the aim of improving not only mortality but also their quality of life.

Invasive Pneumococcal Disease – What GPs Need to Know

Invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) is a deadly but very preventable condition that is occurring all too often here in Australia. IPD, such as pneumonia, meningitis or septicaemia is the most serious manifestation of infection with the very common Strep.pneumoniae bacteria. And young children, pregnant women and older people are most at risk. In this presentation, Associate Professor Daryl Cheng will update clinicians on the current recommendations for vaccination against Strep.pneumoniae - the vaccines available, which vaccine, when and for whom, which vaccines are funded and special groups to consider.
