Primary hyperparathyroidism – Investigation and management

In this episode:

  • Even mild primary hyperparathyroidism significantly increases CV mortality
  • Minimally invasive surgery has become the recommended treatment – where the surgery is done and by whom is critically important for the 10% of cases that are difficult
  • Do a serum calcium and PTH for patients with unspecific neurocognitive, neuromuscular and renolithiasis or low BMD
  • Normo calcaemic hyperparathyroidism may be caused by primary HPT or secondary and a therapeutic/diagnostic trial with 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 for 3 months will disclose the cause
  • Image with ultrasound and parathyroid 4DCT angiogram
