Description

In this episode:

  • Protect the kidney early and the kidney protects you
  • CKD is a marker of poor prognosis and if present, we must work hard to prevent adverse outcomes… now is the time for SGLT2i, statins, ace inhibitors, and arbs
  • Be aware of plasma volume shifts which can happen with large fluctuations in glycaemic control which further damages renal function
  • If the patient is dehydrated due to vomiting or diarrhoea be sure to reduce or stop metformin, SGLT2 inhibitors, ace inhibitors, arbs
  • If the patient is fluid overloaded, may initially present only with a cough and wheeze, worse at night or exertional dyspnoea
  • All patients with CKD ought to have an echocardiogram to exclude a stiff heart and impaired LV ejection fraction
