Description

In this episode, GP Rebecca Overton speaks with Behaviour Analyst Renee Collins about toilet training challenges, from toilet refusal and nappy dependence to supporting autistic children and those with developmental delay:

  • Clarify toilet training “readiness” beyond age alone, including four practical readiness skills GPs can discuss with families
  • Explore why toilet refusal and nappy preference for bowel movements are such common referral issues
  • Gain practical ways to frame and support motivation, from environmental set-up to realistic rewards that match the child’s effort
  • Learn how to reframe accidents and partial progress, use graded goals, and recognise when it’s time to pause, persist, or refer to a behaviour analyst for additional support
