Professor John Newnham AM and Senior Australian of the Year, leads the Australian Preterm Birth Prevention Alliance whose goal is to safely lower the rate of preterm birth in Australia. The seven major interventions will be discussed. The significance of recent research regarding the importance of maintaining pregnancies till 39 weeks will be counterpoised against a recent tendency towards elective early birth.
More AZ confusion and Major Lockdowns have returned! The Government is now recommending a shortening of the AZ vaccine interval, NSW is encouraging 40-59 yos to get it too. A/Prof Crawford will provide a detailed practical understanding of the risk-benefit considerations as well as un update on AZ clots AND bleeds. In addition, A/Prof Crawford will provide an update on the Delta variant as well as information on the "Lambda Variant" and other variants of concern that may arrive in Australia soon and also cover which vaccines currently work against which variants. As we pivot toward the Pfizer vaccine, we may start to see cases of myocarditis. It's important to recognise this very rare phenomenon as well as be able to explain it to your patients. The questions of vaccination in pregnancy continues to be an issue that concerns health professionals. A/Prof Crawford will describe the current available data concerning safety and effectiveness of the Covid vaccines in this scenario. More high level discussions mean that there are many more changes to the national strategy looming with direct implications for those working in General Practice and it's essential for everyone working in primary care to get up to speed on.
Iron deficiency remains common in Australia, especially in women. In her talk, haematologist, Dr Renee Eslick will describe how the significance of iron deficiency is often not appreciated by patients which is why a dietary approach is frequently unsuccessful. She will also outline the recommended therapies for treating iron deficiency and the importance of close follow-up to check not only compliance but also effectiveness.
This presentation brings together a ‘brains-trust’ in the management of menopause who will take you through the management of menopause looking to the past, present and future. The panel will attempt to provide a practical approach to treatment based on current available evidence but will also bring their own considerable personal and professional experience to the discussion.
