Description

Upper GI surgeon Dr Chiara Chadwick unpacks practical, evidence-based management of GERD in general practice – from recognising red flags and differentiating reflux from dyspepsia, identifying functional heartburn and knowing when to investigate, refer or consider surgery.

In this episode:

  • Recognise key red flags in GERD
  • Prescribe PPIs confidently with correct timing, realistic trial periods, adherence checks and step‑down plans
  • Distinguish reflux from dyspepsia and ulcer disease, and know when to order a urea breath test or endoscopy
  • Differentiate structural, motility and functional causes
  • Recognise when specialist or surgical referral is needed
