Finally, it appears we may have something that prevents the development of age-related macular degeneration.

Results from a large, population-based study in the US have shown that metformin use is associated with a lower risk of developing AMD, with the greatest benefit being seen when patients take the drug in low to moderate doses.

“Metformin use over two years in adults aged 55 years and older is associated with a 5% to 10% reduced odds ratio of developing AMD, ” the study authors wrote in JAMA Ophthalmology.
