Australia was the first country to ban vaginal mesh products used surgically via transvaginal implantation for the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse.

Australia was also a leader in evaluating the complications of these implant, through large scale research.1

On November 28th 2017, the Therapeutic Goods Administration withdrew implants for use in prolapse, stating it “was of the belief that the benefits of using transvaginal mesh products in the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse do not outweigh the risks these products pose to patients”.
