Probiotics prove useful in depression

UK researchers appear to be supporting the old adage ‘you are what you eat’, after a study finding probiotics help alleviate the symptoms of depression.

According to their meta-analysis published in the journal, BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health, probiotics, taken by themselves, or combined with prebiotics may help ease depression through their effect on the gut-brain axis – the bidirectional relationship that exists between the brain and the gastrointestinal tract.
